FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 Explained

The 2026 World Cup is the first to expand to 48 teams, and that means a brand new opening knockout round. Here is how the Round of 32 works, how teams qualify, and the full path to the final. As of 26 June 2026.

How the World Cup expanded to 48 teams

FIFA World Cup 26 is the first 48-team edition, up from 32 teams at the last tournament in 2022. That single change reshapes everything that follows the group stage. The 48 sides are split into 12 groups of four, labelled A through L, and because more groups now feed the knockout phase, FIFA added a brand new opening knockout round called the Round of 32. It is the first time any World Cup has featured this stage. Across the whole event there are 104 matches, 72 in the group stage and 32 in the knockouts, making this the largest World Cup ever staged. You can see all twelve sections in our guide to the World Cup 2026 groups.

How 32 teams qualify for the Round of 32

Thirty-two teams reach the Round of 32, and they arrive there in two ways. First, the top two teams in each of the 12 groups go through automatically. That accounts for 24 of the places. The remaining eight spots are handed to the eight best third-placed teams ranked across all 12 groups, decided on points and the usual tie-break rules.

Put the two routes together and you get the full field:

  • 24 teams as the top two from each of the 12 groups (12 winners plus 12 runners-up).
  • 8 teams as the best third-placed sides across all groups.
  • 32 teams in total advancing to the Round of 32.

Spare a thought for Malaysia, who did not qualify and have never reached a World Cup finals, so neutral support is the order of the day. A record nine Asian sides did make it, and you can read about them in our Asian teams at the World Cup 2026 guide.
